Obituary for Arthur I. Lowell

Arthur I. Lowell, 90, of East Windsor, NJ, passed away on Tuesday, March 29, 2016, at University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro, with family at his bedside.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, to the late Dr. Jacob and Katherine (Bessel) Lowell, Arthur also lived in Edison, Monroe and Somerset, NJ, before moving to East Windsor 4 years ago. A World War II era veteran, he proudly served our country as a sergeant with the U.S. Army.

Arthur received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from Brooklyn College and his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. He was a research chemist for more than 3 decades, spending many years at Mobil Chemical, Edison, NJ, and retiring from Sun Chemical, Carlstadt, NJ. His career also included teaching chemistry and physics for three years at Edison High School, Edison, NJ, where many of his students affectionately called him “Doc.”

Arthur was a life-long learner, who was an avid traveler and photographer, loved to read and fully embraced new technology. Often the first in line to buy the latest gadget, he spent many years running the computer club in his Monroe community.

Arthur is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Eleanor (Fain) Lowell. He was a devoted father to daughters Barbara Schwedel (Don) and Carol Levine and son Stewart Lowell (Gloria), and the cherished grandfather of 5 beautiful grandchildren, Jonathan and Heather Schwedel, Audrey Levine and Elana and Luke Lowell. He was predeceased by his dear sister, Adrienne Burger. He is also survived by loving nieces, cousins and friends. He will be greatly missed by all.

Arrangements are under the direction of Barlow & Zimmer Funeral Home, 202 Stockton Street, Hightstown, NJ. Memories and condolences may be shared at www.barlowandzimmer.com. All are welcome to join family and friends on Friday, April 1st at 1:30 p.m. at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge, NJ, for a graveside service.

Donations may be made in memory of Dr. Lowell to the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (http://www.agbell.org/donate/makeyourdonation.html) or your charity of choice.
