William Clayton Sherman (74) of East Windsor, New Jersey, died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, August 3, 2018 after a long and defiant battle with cancer. He was born in Phillipsburg, N.J., to Ethel Clayton Sherman and William V. Sherman of Annandale, N.J. His memories of Annandale describe a perfect childhood spent roaming the woods with friends and hunting and fishing with his father. In 1962 Bill graduated from North Hunterdon Regional High School. He was an active member of his reunion committee and loved rekindling friendships of over 50 years. After high school Bill attended the University of Montana at Missoula, where he enjoyed some of the best years of his life. He then served in Korea as an officer in the U.S. army from 1967 - 1969. In 1967 Bill married Betty Morrow Sherman of Philadelphia and they lived in El Paso, Texas and Normal, Illinois. In 1980 they moved to East Windsor, N.J. where they raised their two children. After a long tenure Bill retired from Lawrence Township High School where he was a guidance counselor. During his retirement he volunteered in the emergency room at Princeton Hospital where he happily devoted 15 years of service. Passion for travel led him from the tip of South America to the Arctic Circle and from the mountains of Bhutan to the deserts of Namibia. His favorite trips were always the African Safaris to see the amazingly beautiful animals in their natural setting. Bill’s spirit of adventure also had him seeking out of the way places for the best Chinese dumplings or the greatest Southern barbeque. Close to home the backyard picnics and time spent with friends built a support village that was deeply appreciated.

Bill is survived by Betty, his wife of 50 years, his two children Clayton William Sherman and Heather Anne Sherman, his namesake grandchild, William Clayton Sherman II, and two nieces, Aileen Argall McElwain and Alison Ann Argall, both of Birmingham, Alabama.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 10th, 2018, 1pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 79 One Mile Road Extension, East Windsor, N.J. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Doctors Without Borders or the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen.
