Harold Joseph Allen Jr., 11/5/1925 - 6/26/2017. Longtime Long Islander, he was a resident of the Meadow Lakes Retirement Community in East Windsor, NJ for the last five years. Born in Brooklyn, NY to Harold Joseph Allen and Teresa Mary Fritz, he was the protective older brother of Elaine T. Coleman. He served in the Army 286th Engineer Combat Battalion in WWII, and then earned a BS from Queens College, and an MS and PhD from Columbia University. Distinguished professor emeritus of philosophy at Adelphi University for over 30 years, he was a member of The Long Island Philosophical Society, The America Philosophical Association, The Aristotelian Society, and The Hume Society. A lifelong philatelist, numismatist, self-reliant skeptical rationalist, secular humanist and seeker of knowledge, he was a generous promoter of the sciences, education, the arts and the preservation of the natural world. He is survived by his devoted wife Rosemary, son John, daughter Felicia, son-in-law Don, grandchildren Lauren and Jason, and friends innumerable.
