Obituary

Woody was the ninth child of twelve born to Tommy Hunter and Margaret Jordan Hunter on
March 15, 1934, in Sardis, Alabama. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother,
uncle, grandfather and friend. Never one to complain, or to call attention to himself, Woody
faced his recent ill health with his characteristic stoicism. He had returned home following an
extended hospital and rehabilitation stay, and was making small, hopeful strides towards
recovery when a sudden decline required a return to the hospital. He passed away peacefully
on February 7, 2020.
As a young man Woody joined the US Navy, and served on the USS Joseph P. Kennedy; he
was honorably discharged in 1963. Following his time in the US Navy, Woody, ever a man of
the sea, worked in the Merchant Marines. He later joined Texaco, Inc., where eventually rose to
the rank of Ship’s Captain. He retired from Texaco in 1994 after an exemplary nineteen years.
In 1966 Woody met Jeanne Surin who had emigrated from Port au Prince, Haiti in 1960. She
and her mother were living in an apartment in Woody’s eldest sister, Evelyn’s, brownstone in
Brooklyn. Woody came by the apartment one day to make some repairs. To say that he was
immediately smitten with Jeanne is an understatement. His persistence in asking her to join him
for dinner ultimately paid off - they were married on June 1, 1968. They were blessed with three
children, Nancy in 1969, Lisa in 1970 and Woody, Jr. in 1975. Woody Jr. was the first boy born
to one of the Hunter male siblings. He was an instant source of immense joy and pride for
Woody Sr., a son to carry on the family name. Woody Sr. was thereafter affectionately dubbed
“Big Woody”.
It was at the urging of a young Woody Jr., that Woody Sr. converted to Roman Catholicism.
Along with Jeanne, he was a dedicated parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Church for more
than four decades. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and for many years served
dutifully as an usher at Sunday mass.
Woody is predeceased by his parents Tommy Hunter and Margaret Jordan Hunter; his sisters:
Pauline (Samuel) Hayden, Corine Hunter, Mattie (Hillard W.) Pouncy, Eloise “Bobbie” (Percy)
Pritchett and Evelyn L. (Bernie) Maxey; brothers: Leslie “Buddy” Hunter, and Hardy Hunter;
brothers-in-law Samuel Hayden, Sinclair Careathers, Percy Pritchett, Vander L. Beatty and
Bernie Maxey.
Woody is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne, and three adoring children, Nancy (Christophe)
Hunter-Jadot, Lisa (Andy) Hunter Romanelli, and Woody (Virginie) Hunter, Jr.
Woody is survived, and will be sorely missed, by his nine beloved grandchildren: Mia Hunter,
Sogo Suzuki, Sofia Romanelli, Manon Jadot, Thea Suzuki, Luca Romanelli, Olivier Jadot, Blake
Romanelli, and Zoe Hunter.
He is also survived by his two sisters: Julie (Sinclair) Collison-Careathers and Betty (Vander L.)
Hunter-Beatty, youngest brother, William (Crystal) Hunter, brother-in-law, Hillard W. Pouncy,
and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
