Obituary for Doris V Wetherill

Born on May 20, 1927 to Bessie and Henry Webb, Doris Vivian (Webb) Wetherill passed away peacefully in her home in Hightstown, NJ on May 23, 2022 —three days after marking her 95th birthday. Doris was predeceased by her loving husband, Leon Wetherill. Surviving are her beloved son, William (Bill) H. Wetherill and his wife Joanne Kerekes-Wetherill, her treasured grandson, Kris Kerekes and his wife Michelle, and her two cherished great granddaughters, Oliva (who shares a birthday with her Great Grandmom Doris) and Charlotte, all of Neptune City, NJ. Doris also leaves behind close friends, neighbors, and cousins—all of whom have been wonderful to her—and an outstanding caregiver, Viktoria. Doris’ family is particularly grateful to the staff and volunteers of Penn Medicine Hospice for their excellent care and compassion. We could not have asked for better partners as we walked Doris home.

Doris spent her childhood living on a farm in East Windsor, NJ where she learned to drive a tractor and pick potatoes at an early age. She attended the Windsor School and Hightstown High School and was a proud alumna of Douglass College at Rutgers, New Brunswick (then, The New Jersey College for Women). Upon graduation, Doris taught 3rd grade at the Windsor School and Walter C. Black School in Hightstown. Doris always considered teaching to be one of her greatest joys and accomplishments—and she remembered her students with much fondness.

An excellent cook, Doris enjoyed finding and trying out new recipes. A saver by nature, Doris was a great “coupon-er,” and had a knack for finding sales and best prices. She loved holding and attending garage sales, estate sales, and auctions. Always on the search for a good deal, she was a skilled bargainer! Among Doris’ favorite pastimes were doing word searches, watching Dr. Phil, going to Atlantic City to play the slots, and traveling to the outlets in Lancaster, PA—always with a side trip to Shady Maple for their buffet! Doris loved her family dogs—and was blessed to have her last dog, Susie, as a companion to nearly the end of her life.

Doris will be remembered with great affection. A viewing will be held at the Barlow & Zimmer Funeral Home, 202 Stockton St, Hightstown, NJ on Thursday, May 26, from 6pm to 8pm. A private interment will follow the next day at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hightstown.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in Doris’ name to the Hightstown First Aid Squad at 168 Bank St, Hightstown, NJ 08520 or to the East Windsor Rescue Squad District 1 at 47 One Mile Rd Ext, East Windsor, NJ 08520.
