Obituary for Rose Ann Howarth

Age 85
Rose Ann Mary Howarth (nee Borichewski) of East Windsor passed away peacefully on April 4, 2023 at Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center. Rose Ann grew up in South River, NJ and graduated from South River High School in 1955. She studied history at Douglass College and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1959. She married Ronald Edward Howarth in 1959 and they lived in Sayreville and North Brunswick for most of their 60 years together. They moved to Meadow Lakes in East Windsor, NJ seven years ago. Rose Ann devoted her life to service as a teacher and principal. She taught elementary grades at several levels in the Sayreville Public School system from 1959-1970. She began teaching at Rutgers Preparatory School in 1970, advancing to Department Chair in 1975, Assistant Principal in 1980 and Lower School Principal in 1985 continuing until her retirement in 2000. While at Rutgers Prep, Rose Ann was known affectionately by students as the PrinciPAL for her exuberant, supportive, and eternally optimistic manner. Her enthusiasm for reading and writing was sustained throughout her career. She initiated writing portfolios and journals and taught poetry writing, encouraged students to enter writing contests, and taught book binding. She was instrumental in the initiation of the first Science Fair. She designed and implemented Rutgers Prep’s first Pre-K program, a program now proven to enhance successful learning in subsequent grades. She played a leadership role for many years in the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools, expanding the visibility of RPS and bringing innovative ideas to its teachers. In her retirement, Rose Ann returned to classrooms where she read stories to children most often using a puppet to further enliven the storytelling. Similarly, she worked with each of her grandchildren on writing stories instilling her love of storytelling. Rose Ann was an avid photographer taking pictures of family and friends documenting the moments of her very full life. For many years she enjoyed serving as a judge for the photography contest at the Middlesex County Fair where she made many friends. Rose Ann was passionate about Douglass College and served the Alumni Association and her class in several roles. Rose Ann was pre-deceased by her loving husband Ronald in 2020 and her older brother Joseph Borichewski. She is survived by her daughter Marilyn and her husband Lawrence Livornese of Gladwyne, PA and son Ronald and his wife Linda of Cranbury, NJ; grandchildren Lawrence Livornese and his wife Serin Seckin of Brooklyn, NY, Katie Livornese and her husband Jason Lefever of Philadelphia, PA, Michael Livornese of Philadelphia, PA, and Dillon Howarth, Jillian Howarth and Kevin Howarth of Cranbury, NJ; great-granddaughter Lara Livornese of Brooklyn, NY; two brothers Michael Borichewski of East Brunswick, NJ and Raymond Borichewski of Jackson, NJ. Calling hours will be 5-8 PM on Monday April 10 at the Barlow & Zimmer Funeral Home 202 Stockton Street, Hightstown, NJ 08520. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Tuesday April 11 at St. Anthony of Padua RC Church, 251 Franklin Street, Hightstown, NJ. In lieu of flowers, any remembrances can be made to Wounded Warrior Project or Catholic Charities.
