A Lady with Class and Sophistication
I first met "Apitita" in Miami Beach, FL while I was vacationing with my future husband, George's family. George had filled me in about his grandparents, Apitita and Cuco, prior to my meeting them. I knew from his many stories that he was lucky to have had such loving grandparents in his life. Once I met them, I knew instantly why they were so special. They each had such spunk and zest for life--and clearly loved each other. Apetita always carried herself with such grace and sophistication. She always looked elegant and coordinated. Despite her attention to detail, she was equally warm and unpretentious. I wish I could have met her earlier to have experienced her home in Philadelphia they way George describes it. I can almost imagine her standing in the kitchen cooking some fantastic Cuban meal, asking "Jorgie" if he would like some more white rice. My husband always said no one could make white rice like Apitita. I have often wondered if it was the rice that was so special or the fact that it was a loving grandmother feeding a grandson in only a way a grandmother can? Rest in peace, Apitita.
